Māori or Pacific Island RMO Scholarship to attend Te Aka Tauwhiro Aotearoa Anaesthesia Trainee Meeting
Te Aka Tauwhiro: 27-28 November 2026, Tāhuna Queenstown
This scholarship aims to foster connection and strengthen clinical learning for a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Māori or Pacific Island descent who is considering anaesthesia as a specialty profession. It intends to assist an RMO who, without the support of the scholarship, may not otherwise be able to attend Te Aka Tauwhiro.
The scholarship provides registration, accommodation and travel for one RMO to attend the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists – Ngā Ringa Tauwhiro o Aotearoa event – Te Aka Tauwhiro Anaesthesia Trainee Meeting.
Scholarship applications close 11.59pm, Wednesday 30 September.
‘Te Aka Tauwhiro’ references a vine of healing. It symbolises growth, learning and interconnectedness. A new meeting for anaesthesia trainees, Te Aka Tauwhiro, will offer valuable learning relevant to all stages of training through a programme that blends scientific content and essential human factors/non-clinical skills. Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be employed as a Resident Medical Officer in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Identify as Māori or Pacific Island descent.
- Demonstrate through their application:
- an interest in specialising in anaesthesia.
- how attending Te Aka Tauwhiro will assist in their medical education and/or career in medicine.
- their commitment to health equity in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Be able to attend Te Aka Tauwhiro on the 27-28th of November 2026
The scholarship package includes:
- Full meeting registration. Including the Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Welcome Reception and MAS Kai & Kēmu function.
- Return travel to Tāhuna Queenstown.
- Two nights’ accommodation at the Millennium Hotel Queenstown, including breakfast.

Applications will be reviewed by a Select Committee representing the NZSA. The scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the committee.
Terms & Conditions
Application & Selection
Applications close 11.59pm Wednesday 30 September 2026. Applicants will be notified of the decision before 16 October 2026.
Applications and all supporting documentation must be submitted to the NZSA before the closing date. Applications received after this date may not be considered.
The scholarship will cover:
- One full registration that includes the Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Welcome Reception and MAS Kai & Kēmu function.
- Return travel expenses to Tāhuna Queenstown by road or air, as applicable based on the recipient’s location.
- Two nights’ accommodation at the meeting’s venue, Millennium Queenstown. Check-in Friday 27 November and check out Sunday 29 November 2026. Including Breakfast.
- Transfers to and from Queenstown Airport and the meeting venue, Millennium Hotel.
Applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee representing the NZSA. The committee comprises:
- One member of Te Aka Tauwhiro Organising Committee
- A Māori or Pacific Island representative from the NZSA
- NZSA President
A scholarship will only be awarded if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is an application of sufficient merit.
The scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Selection Committee and the NZSA. The Committee’s decision is final.
The Selection Committee and the NZSA reserve the right not to award the scholarship if no applications are deemed to be of sufficient merit.
Acceptance
In the event that a successful applicant is unable to attend, or does not communicate their acceptance of the scholarship before the required deadline, the Selection Committee may elect to award that scholarship to another eligible applicant.
By accepting a scholarship, the recipient provides the NZSA with their consent to publicise their name as a successful applicant and their work location in NZSA communications.
Travel & Accommodation
The NZSA will be responsible for booking travel and accommodation arrangements on behalf of the recipient.
Incidental costs associated with travel and attendance at the Meeting will not be included and are the responsibility of the recipient.
Any accommodation additional to the dates outlined above is entirely the responsibility of the recipient unless otherwise agreed with the NZSA.
