Get involved as a Trainee Representative: Vacancy on NZSA Executive Committee

The NZSA is seeking two Trainee Representatives to join its Executive Committee.
This is a great opportunity for a trainee at any stage of their training to represent and support their Aotearoa New Zealand trainee and wider anaesthesia community. Whilst also gaining governance experience early in their career alongside a supportive committee of colleagues from across the motu.
The NZSA’s mission is to serve our membership through advocacy, community connection and educational opportunities whilst promoting sustainable processes. We promote continued education, research, and innovation for those working in the field of anaesthesia to ensure patient safety.
As the Trainee Representative, you will provide a strong voice for trainees and keep the NZSA Executive Committee updated on key trainee issues and concerns. Trainee representatives are full voting members of the NZSA Executive Committee.
Your role will include
- Keeping the NZSA updated on key trainee issues and concerns.
- Providing a trainee perspective on matters of the NZSA.
- Supporting the executive committee in their projects and fulfilling the purpose of the NZSA. In particular on initiatives of special interest to you and trainees in New Zealand.
- Communicating with heads of trainee organisations such as the ANZCA Trainee Committee, ANZCA NZ Trainee Committee and Australian Society of Anaesthetists Trainee Committee.
- Representing the NZSA at trainee events.
- Assisting with the organisation of Anaesthesia Trainee Collective events.
- Providing regular updates in NZSA Communications from a trainee perspective.
There are two NZSA Trainee Representatives working together on the Executive Committee. Staff in the NZSA Office and the wider NZSA Executive Committee will also be supporting you in this work.
Commitment
The Trainee Representative is usually a two-year term.
The NZSA Executive Committee meets face-to-face three times a year:
- a full day meeting in Wellington in February/March
- a half-day meeting in Wellington with the ANZCA New Zealand National Committee (NZNC) followed by a half-day meeting of the Executive Committee, usually late June.
- a half-day meeting on the day before the NZ Aotearoa ASM in the host location, usually early November.
The Committee also meet via Zoom for an hour every 6-8 weeks as required.
Executive Committee members are also expected to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM), usually held as part of the Aotearoa NZ ASM.
The travel and accommodation costs for Executive Committee members for the face-to-face meetings are reimbursed by the NZSA.
Additional meetings: NZSA Trainee Representatives are highly encouraged to attend Aotearoa NZ Anaesthesia Education Committee (ANZAEC) meetings (occasional) and ANZCA NZ Trainee Committee meetings (four meetings a year). They may also provide a virtual update at the Australian Society of Anaesthetists Trainee Committee meetings (four meetings a year).
We appreciate there will be times during the year when you may need to concentrate on exams and training and may be unable to meet all commitments. We aim to support our Executive Members during busy periods such as these.
