Joining the NZSA is easy, we would be delighted to have you join us in continuing to build a strong, connected anaesthesia community in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Membership
The Society offers different categories of membership. Full Members, SMO MECA (relevant for many in ‘MOSS’ and ‘Fellow” positions), may be able to claim membership fees from your employer.
Annual subscriptions are based on membership category. Rates can be found below.
Membership type, subscriptions and fees
Active members will be practising Anaesthetists in New Zealand. Membership includes a subscription to the AIC Journal. You may be eligible to claim these fees back from your employer and if you work in Private Practice, these are tax-deductible.
Full membership subscription 2024: $1658.29
Trainee Members will be practising Anaesthetists in New Zealand who are working towards a postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesia. Trainee membership does not include a subscription to the AIC Journal, this can be added to your subscription for an additional cost.
Full membership subscription 2024: Free
Specialist Pain Medicine Physicians who are also practicing Anaesthetists in New Zealand. These members receive the same benefits as full (ordinary) members.
SPMP Practicing Anaesthetist subscription 2024: $1658.29
Specialist Pain Medicine Physicians who are are not practicing Anaesthetists in New Zealand can join the Society with the same benefits as Associate Members. They will not be eligible to vote or hold Executive office or form part of the quorum at meetings of members.
SPMP not practicing anaesthetist subscription 2024: $551.25
Associate Members will be persons other than Anaesthetists practising in New Zealand, who would normally be Full (Ordinary) Members. This criterion can be extended to include non-anaesthetic pain physicians with the approval of the Executive Committee. They can also be anaesthetists in fellowships overseas. Associate members will receive Society membership correspondence, including Society publications such as the magazine, all will be able to attend Scientific meetings. They will not be eligible to vote or hold Executive office or form part of the quorum at meetings of members. Associate membership does not include a subscription to the AIC Journal, this can be added to your subscription for an additional cost.

The NZSA offers free membership to Pacific anaesthetists working in the Pacific. Pacific members will receive Society membership correspondence, including Society publications such as the magazine, and will be able to attend Scientific meetings. They will not be eligible to vote or hold Executive office or form part of the quorum at meetings of members.
Pacific Membership subscription 2024: Free
Retired members will have been active members of the Society but are no longer engaged in the practice of Anaesthesia.
Retired Membership 2024: Free
Honorary Members will be persons who due to their special interest in, or conspicuous services to the Specialty of Anaesthesia, are nominated by the Executive Committee and elected at a General or Special Meeting as Honorary Members. Honorary Membership will normally be conferred upon persons who have been of direct service to the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists. They will not be expected to take an active part in the Society’s affairs and will, if anaesthetists, usually reside in countries other than New Zealand. They will not be eligible to vote, hold office or form part of the quorum at meetings of members.
Life Members will be members of the Society who have made outstanding contributions to Anaesthesia in New Zealand, and/or to the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists. They will be nominated by the Executive Committee and elected as Life Members at a General Meeting of the Society. They will be eligible to vote, to hold office and form part of the quorum at meetings of members.
Membership FAQs
Pro-rata rate
New Full members have the option to pay a pro-rata amount at any stage of the year, up until 30 November. After this date, any new registrations will be registering for the next subscription year ie; a full subscription will be payable.
When completing your membership application, select no for the returning members’ question.
Fees are reviewed yearly at the NZSA Annual General Meeting.
Returning members are required to pay the full annual membership year fee regardless of when they re-join. When completing your renewal application select yes and fill in the respective years.
We ask new members to complete a membership application form. This form will ask for your contact details, year and month of birth, gender and ethnicity: this helps us to obtain accurate demographics of our membership which allows us to better represent the community we are supporting.
Once you register your details, you will be directed to pay your subscription (if applicable).
Upon completion of payment, you will be sent an automated acknowledgement of your registration as well as details to gain access to the members’ only section of the website. For those logging in for the first time, we would recommend resetting your password after logging in. Once the process is completed, access to the members’ only section will be triggered.
Credit Card payment (Visa or MasterCard) via the website is available but you can also pay by internet banking into our account: 02 0168-0240227-000 (BNZ) referencing NZSA Subs and your name to assist with payment reconciliation. Please note that credit card payments attract processing fees
The membership year is 1 January to 31 December, with fees reviewed at the NZSA Annual General Meeting. Members who have not paid by 31 January will not be able to access member pages until their membership is renewed.
If you are on the SMO MECA (relevant for many in ‘MOSS’ and ‘Fellow” positions), then please select the “Full Membership” option. You may be able to claim back the full membership fee from your employer.
Trainee membership is free. This does not include the AIC Journal; however, you have the option of adding the journal subscription to your trainee membership for a fee.
Sometimes members take a break from membership, for example, if they are travelling overseas for a fellowship year or going on parental leave. If you are not able to claim back your fees during this period, please contact us so we can put your membership on hold or provide you with a short-term solution. Contact the Membership Manager.
Full members can claim their fees or a percentage of their fees depending on their FTE when working in public under the Collective Agreement.
Private anaesthetists can claim all or a portion of their fees as a business expense depending on the portion of their private practice.
