Dunedin Hospital’s Anaesthesia Department welcomes applications for the position of Specialist Anaesthetist, with a negotiable start date. We are currently delighted to be expanding our department and as such are looking for motivated and enthusiastic people to join our team.
About Southern District Health Board
Our Southern DHB covers the largest geographical catchment amongst all the DHB’s in New Zealand. We proudly strive to provide top quality healthcare to our diverse patient population. We are now looking to complete our team with another anaesthetist to come and join us. Dunedin Hospital has 300 beds and servicing the Southern region which covers a population of around 340,000. The Anaesthesia Service has state of the art equipment and is supported by our well-trained technicians and PACU staff. This is also an exciting time to join as our service prepares for the New Dunedin Hospital. As a Specialist you’ll be expected to provide afterhours cover during the week and will participate on a 1:8 weekend roster.
We are a tertiary level hospital with a full range of elective and acute surgical specialities and can offer you a varied and challenging array of anaesthesia work.
Ideally, we are looking for someone with the following skills and experience to complement our team:
- An excellent general anaesthesia skill set
- A team player with exceptional interpersonal skills who builds effective relationships both within and external to their team
- Is solution focussed and can demonstrate excellent decision making and priority setting in a clinical environment
- Enthusiasm for teaching and passing on their knowledge to junior members of staff
In addition, it would be desirable for the applicant to have a special interest in anaesthetic allergy testing and / or simulation training.
Appointed specialists will possess FANZCA or an equivalent qualification allowing a vocational registration with the NZ Medical Council. The Southern DHB recruitment team are able to provide support in applying or renewing previous vocational registration. Applications from overseas Physicians who had previous vocational registration are welcomed and a start date will be negotiated with registration and immigration requirements taken into consideration

Outside of work, you will find life in Dunedin to be very easy with its affordable living, great schools, laid back lifestyle and world-famous wildlife on the Otago Peninsula. This compact yet vibrant regional city has plenty of energy, which is to be expected with it being a University town. Central Otago is a notable holiday destination and many outdoor recreation opportunities are easily accessible from Dunedin.
