How we advocate

How the NZSA Advocates

The NZSA continuously seeks opportunities to build connections and develop engagement with government, stakeholder organisations, and public and private healthcare providers to continue conversations on issues most pertinent to our specialty.

This advocacy work focuses across a range of topics, including workforce, standards of medical practice, health equity, assistance to the anaesthetist, private practice, drugs/medicines listing and safety and prescribing rights.

Representatives of the NZSA meet with the Minister of Health and opposition health spokespeople and ACC, liaise with other medical and allied health organisations, both in NZ and globally, including the Ministry of Health, the Medical Council of New Zealand, ACC, the New Zealand Anaesthetic Technicians’ Society, Pharmac, and the New Zealand Private Surgical Hospitals Association. The Society has representation on the ANZCA Council, and its New Zealand National Committee, and attends council meetings of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists.

Alongside submissions in response to policy and legislation, influencing issues affecting anaesthesia, the wider health sector and patient care. Copies of all completed submissions can be read on the Submissions Page.

Current key advocacy work

Representing our Specialties. Including the pivotal role anaesthetists have in the perioperative process and the underserved role of SPMP in Aotearoa.

Advocating for greater recognition of the importance of anaesthesia in healthcare delivery, anaesthesia representation in important hui where decisions are made – in particular those that affect surgical capacity, access to care, patient safety, and pain services, and maintaining our high skill sets and standards of anaesthesia and sedation care.

Private Practice. Encouraging a collaborative public – private healthcare model that upholds clinical judgement and patient and clinical safety, and recognition for the wide role of the anaesthetist, including pre and post-operative care. Alongside regular meetings with contract providers such as Southern Cross and ACC, to discuss areas of concern for our members working in private practice.

Health workforce and wellbeing. Seeking positive action from the Government and national health agencies towards valuing and looking after our existing healthcare workforce. To prioritise the wellbeing of the health workforce and address workforce shortages with clear planning.

Climate Change and sustainable healthcare. The NZSA’s Environmental and Sustainability Network drives our work on sustainable healthcare and climate change advocacy. Seeking to reduce the carbon footprint of anaesthesia and working towards making a positive contribution to Aotearoa’s environment.

Access to pain services. The impact and burden of pain on our population is underestimated and undervalued. The consequences of this could be wide-reaching for the population of Aotearoa New Zealand. The NZSA will continue to advocate for equitable and prioritised pain services for all of our population.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi ensures alignment between Te Tiriti and our core values as an organisation.

Global Partnerships. The NZSA have strong international relationships and ties allowing us to advocate for our anaesthesia community on the global stage. Through our global partnerships, membership to the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and NZSA Global Health Committee (GHC), the NZSA actively participates in developing safe anaesthesia worldwide.
